Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Sinister Night
What is the Story of Sinister Night?
Sinister Night is based on John Carpenter's The Thing. It combines social deduction with psychological terror brought to you by paranoia and mistrust. A group of streamers visits a haunted school to take part in horror reality TV. Some of the streamers are possessed during their visit by demonic spirits. As the terror keeps brewing among them, one of the streamers dies in a horrific way.
What is this supernatural force that is haunting them? The school's mysterious past is revealed by the souls of those who meet their tragic ends. But be aware that the scariest part is not the spirits nor the ancient stories, it is not knowing who to trust. There is no way to know who to trust in the group when suspicions and doubts began spreading. It is difficult to avoid killing others under the pressure of paranoia.
Gameplay
Take Among Us, mix it with Phasmo and add a ton of horror… There you have it, Sinister Night! Among 8 players in the haunted school, there are 2 who are possessed by evil spirits and all you have to do is to figure out who those 2 are. Try staying alive while you banish the possessed ones. At first, the game instructions are not super clear and you may feel lost about what to do. Luckily, it is not so hard to figure it out once you get into it. Just treat your first couple of sessions as training, then you will be good to go.
Aside from that, as you need to have a team of 8 to start, waiting in the lobby can take up to 45 minutes which is quite bothering. If you have 7 friends ready to play, good for you! If not, you might have to wait until the game gains more popularity.
Game Mechanics
When it comes to game mechanics, there is a lot to be fixed. Apart from bugs and glitches here and there, Sinister Night faces bigger issues. The in-game voice chatting system is really bad. Some players are too loud while you barely hear others and many players stated that using other voice-chat platforms works much better for them.
Also, there are different character models with different skills in the game, which I think is a really great way to spice things up. However, the same model can be picked as many times as you want within a group so you might end up with a crew who have all the same abilities and no variations. I thought it would be much better if one model could only be picked once in a team. In addition to that, they are a bit difficult to identify. By adding more cosmetics or making slight adjustments in appearance, developers can easily make the member more distinctive.
Graphics and Atmosphere
The game looks really good. Location designs are super cool and creepy. The graphics definitely make you feel like you are hovering through an abandoned school and at every corner, there might be something to catch you by surprise. The atmosphere gives you chills and the character designs are impressive as well. Overall, the way Sinister Night looks is a total success.
Is Sinister Night Worth Playing?
If you are looking for a horror game to play with your friends, or you are searching for a game that is close to Among Us but newer and spicier, Sinister Night can be what you are looking for. Although there are issues in gameplay mechanics, it is worth a shot if you can convince 7 friends to buy it with you.
