Swords and Sandals Immortals Review

Swords and Sandals Immortals Review

Are you up for some nostalgia? Swords and Sandals is back and it’s better than ever. Whiskeybarrel Studios brings back the brutal turn-based combat in which gladiators say goodbye to their limbs, scream so loudly that their foe’s heads explode and develop their characters in whatever way they want. The greatest arena fun starts here.
7Very Good
  • Graphics and sounds design
  • Easy to learn mechanics
  • It has humour elements
  • Nostalgic
  • Too many bugs and glitches

What is the Lore of Swords and Sandals Immortals?

For over a decade, we wondered about the fate of the Starbound Gladiator following the events of Swords and Sandals III. Now, all is clear as the robotic Automatons return with new space-age technology to Brandor. However, they are chased and betrayed by an evil former legendary gladiator now corrupted and controlled by an interstellar demon. The mission of the Starbound Gladiator is to save the entire world in only 300 days, unless he is stopped in the arena.

Swords and Sandals VI will be a massive single-player campaign. This campaign will have you travel across the continent searching for Arena Champions to defeat. Fight in the scorching heat in T'Kash desert, the lonely abyssal caves of Forbidden Depths or in the great palaces at Phaetor.

Game Mechanics

Swords and Sandals has many cartoon-like images of fantasy gladiators fighting each other. If you are not a fan of visual violence, you can turn off the game settings to prevent decapitations, blood splats, and loss of limbs during battles.

Gameplay

It is very easy to follow the gameplay. You can create a gladiator and equip them with various weapons and armour. Then send them into the arena to battle other gladiators. Win gold, gain experience, level up. You should choose your skill points and stats wisely to manage your gold.

This will allow you to see the bigger picture, new powerful champions, dungeons to explore and towns to visit. There is also a world to save. Graphics feel nostalgic and cartoonish, making them both realistic and beautiful.

Combat System

You begin weak, but your power increases over time. This game requires more strategic thinking than previous S&S games, which included the stress meter mechanic as well as climate effects and traits specific to certain races. This is different from other games. If you lose a fight, the only penalty is a day lost and some gold lost. It's not bad, but it can make a big difference in the future.

Classes

Although not all classes will be equally strong, you can sense a clear attempt to give each class unique strengths. Warrior defeats Mage. Bard defeats Warrior Rogue, Ranger, and other sub-classes. These classes don't have an identity within the game.

Is Swords and Sandals Immortals Worth Playing?

The game is still in early access and has a lot of work to do. There are many bugs and glitches that may get annoying after a certain point. Despite my mixed feelings, I can see the game's potential. The game is rich in depth and attention to detail is impressive. You can sense that every character and detail has an important purpose and are woven together to create Brandor's meticulous Universe. This game is bound to exceed our expectations due to the passion of the developer.
